Meet Tom Kocinski, Senior Event Manager

Meet Tom, one of our Senior Event Managers. Having joined Moving Venue in the early part of 2024, we take time to get to know Tom and understand more about his first few months with us.

Tom, how are you?

I write this having a slightly sore head and gruff voice as it was our work pre-Christmas social last night, before we ramp up into the busy Christmas season. There was plenty of food and drink and I was gifted a Christmas-themed goodie bag, whilst we all did some bowling and I somehow got coaxed into doing karaoke.

All this added up to a wonderful night, and nights like these really do help you bond and connect with everyone in the company.

How did you start out in the industry?

I started out back in December 2013. I was an actor needing a flexible job and had a good friend who worked for a catering company which I joined as a barman. Being someone who always gives my best and is very much a problem solver, I wanted to progress. I was encouraged to work towards becoming an Event Manager and this is something that came naturally as I enjoyed the organisation and the leadership this role brought. Looking to always progress my career, I worked with multiple companies before becoming a Senior Event Operations Manager and I haven’t looked back since.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO JOIN US HERE AT MOVING VENUE?

I’m about to complete eight months here and I couldn’t be happier in my job, I was drawn to the company  knowing their reputation for being one of the top event caterers in London and certainly the most experienced. In a previous role, we were pitching and losing business to Moving Venue, and seeing the end product and impressive delivery on their social media, it was a personal goal to join should the opportunity ever present itself. And now that I am here I completely get why we continue to win business and keep clients coming back.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHT SO FAR?

I have two highlights so far, the first being working at Farnborough Airshow, where I was given a very important chalet to manage. The client is lovely, but really value consistency with their team, so they initially had concerns with having a new person to manage their chalet. The challenge was to show them that not only can I meet their expectations, but exceed them. After a week of working for them, they signed on for the next two years with us and I look forward to ensuring everything goes even better for them over these next two years.

The second was recently delivering a 500-guest wedding in Hampton Court Palace and the logistical challenge that the sheer size and scale of this event offered to us. I saw this as such an exciting challenge, sitting down with my boss, we planned to operate this large complex event into much smaller individual events to focus on finer details. This event highlighted how key every person is in our delivery, and how great all of our team and suppliers are, who help us in ensuring that we do always deliver.

HAS MOVING VENUE MET YOUR OWN PERSONAL EXPECTATIONS?

I have to say, I have been particularly impressed by the commitment by the whole of the company, from the finesse of the initial stage of enquiry with the sales team, through to the planning department and onto the delivery by the chefs, logistics and operational teams. Everyone is always unified in working together. For each event no matter how big or how small it is, everyone brings their A-Game to ensure every guest has an amazing time eating incredible food and sublime bespoke cocktails/mocktails.

Aside from my own career goals, it was important for me to work for a company where they value their employees. It was hugely impressive to me that Moving Venue offer employee discounts for restaurants and bars across London. There’s huge incentive trips and just within the past year some of the Operations team have enjoyed trips to New York and Champagne. They also offer medical health cover and enhanced parental leave pay, I feel are also lovely perks that employees really want these days.

When joining it was really important for me to feel part of the company and to work with people with whom I’d also consider friends, as let’s be honest we spend more time together than we do with our friends and family so I needed to choose the right people with whom I work. I definitely made the right choice, I feel very much a part of the furniture already. I have an incredibly talented and experienced Senior team at Director level that I can learn from and who have ‘been there and done it’ with Moving Venue. Their eye for detail is only aiding my development. I’m being entrusted to deliver important and complex events, showing the trust and faith they have in me. There’s no micro-management here, just guidance which is really important for myself to feel I can progress. The whole team was super welcoming, and everyone took their time to speak with me to get to know me and help me settle in and understand the Moving Venue way of systems and processes. Not to mention the food, the event food is just incredible and the fact we get lunch made for us everyday, it’s simply amazing. We are encouraged to work from home one day a week, and early starts are extremely rare should we be on-site of an evening, which helps keep the work-life balance in a good place.

WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER GOALS HERE AT MOVING VENUE?

Moving Venue has a clear defined structure, our managers will catch up with us weekly to discuss our operational plans for every event ensuring that every details is covered so that we can go to site full of confidence to deliver. This is forming the basis that I can go and achieve challenging and more complex events here at Moving Venue.

I know as a Senior Operations Manager, I can grow within the company which was my other key deciding factor for joining as I’m someone who need something to aim for and work towards. I’m keen to develop further and feel that I can achieve my personal goals at Moving Venue, not only in size and scale of the events I lead but perhaps helping manage newcomers and help them feel settled and understand our way of working.
