Brand new and notable exhibitions due to open soon across our venues
At Moving Venue, we are proud and honoured to work with some of London's most iconic museums and galleries. These historic and beautiful venues are constantly updating their public exhibitions and as such we thought we’d make note of some of the brand new and notable exhibitions due to open soon across our venues.
Alice Curiouser and Curiouser
Opening 27th June 2020
Travel down the rabbit hole with this immersive, theatrical exhibition of anything and everything ‘Alice in Wonderland’-related. The most comprehensive ‘Alice’ exhibition ever held, the show celebrates Lewis Carroll’s world-famous creation before profiling the endless ways the original idea has been reinvented over the last 157 years.
Featuring theatrical sets, large-scale digital projections and immersive environments, Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser will take children and adults on a journey through the enchanting and extraordinary world of Wonderland, through Alice’s eyes. Designed by award-winning designer Tom Piper – best known for his stage designs for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the V&A as well as his Tower of London poppies installation – the exhibition will reward ‘curiouser and curiouser’ visitors with secret doors and interactive displays.
The exhibition will close with a newly commissioned ‘through the looking glass-inspired’ digital art installation, meaning that visitors will arrive descending down into the rabbit hole and leave through the looking glass.
Arctic
Opening 28th May 2020
From 28,000-year-old mammoth ivory jewellery to modern refitted snow mobiles, the objects in this immersive exhibition reveal the creativity and resourcefulness of Indigenous Peoples in the Arctic. Developed in collaboration with Arctic communities, the exhibition celebrates the ingenuity and resilience of Arctic Peoples throughout history. It tells the powerful story of respectful relationships with icy worlds and how Arctic Peoples have harnessed the weather and climate to thrive.
Titian & Artemisia
Opening March / April 2020
Titian – opening 16th March 2020
In 1551, Prince Philip of Spain, the future King Philip II, commissioned Titian, the most famous painter in Europe, to produce a group of paintings showing Classical myths primarily taken from the Roman poet Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses’.
The exhibition reunites all six paintings in the series, from Boston, Madrid, and London, for the first time in over four centuries. Included are ‘Diana and Actaeon’ and ‘Diana and Callisto’; works we own jointly with the National Galleries of Scotland.
Combining Titian’s remarkable talent as both artist and storyteller, the mythological scenes capture moments of high drama; a fatal encounter, the shameful discovery, a hasty abduction. Titian expertly manipulates paint and colour to dazzling effect; capturing luminous flesh, sumptuous fabrics, water, reflection, and atmospheric, almost enchanted, landscapes.
Artemisia – opening 4th April 2020
“I will show Your Illustrious Lordship what a woman can do”
In 17th-century Europe, at a time when women artists were not easily accepted, Artemisia was exceptional. She challenged conventions and defied expectations to become a successful artist and one of the greatest storytellers of her time.
Artemisia painted subjects that were traditionally the preserve of male artists and for the male gaze; transforming meek maidservants into courageous conspirators and victims into survivors.
In this first major exhibition of Artemisia’s work in the UK, see her best-known paintings including two versions of her iconic and viscerally violent ‘Judith beheading Holofernes’; as well as her self portraits, heroines from history and the Bible, and recently discovered personal letters, seen in the UK for the first time.
